It’s a Real Safety Threat

Many homeowners don’t think twice about pinning their automatic garage door remote opener to their sun visor and leaving it there, conveniently available for when they’re pulling back into their driveway and they need it.

But this is just like leaving a key to your house in plain sight on your dashboard. If burglars break into your car and take the remote, they can also open the glove box and check your car’s registration to see where you live.

Immediately De-Program Remotes and Shut Off the System

If your garage door remote is stolen, return home and immediately de-program all other remotes. Depending on the opener model you own, you may be able to press one button and wipe the system’s memory. You should also turn off the automatic system until you have new remotes programmed and ready to use. Just pull the emergency lever and you will be able to open and close your garage door manually.

If you don’t have a deadbolt lock on the inside of your garage doors, it’s a good idea to get one for an extra layer of security.

Purchase and Program New Remotes

Replace your stolen remote and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on reprogramming each device. Make sure you purchase a model that is compatible with your system and that’s recommended by the manufacturer.

Future Prevention Tips

Don’t invite thieves and burglars into your car then your home — keep the garage door remote with you at all times. If possible, get a remote that can fit on your keychain so you won’t forget to take it out of your car with you.

Also, make sure the door between your garage and the inside of your house is always locked with a deadbolt. This will help prevent burglars from entering your home if they gain access to your garage.
